Non-Residents lose CGT exemption on Australian real estate.
From 30 June 2020, the government will remove the Capital Gains Tax (CGT) exemption on a Principal Place of Residence (PPR or main residence) for non-residents.
For people who are not ‘tax residents’, any property sold after this date will incur tax on the capital gain, including family homes.
Australian Citizens and Permanent Residents are affected.
If you are working abroad or have been outside Australia for some time, we urge you to check your status now.
